6 Days of Deep Powder

March 13 - Soaked right through after a day of skiing deep powder under a sky of falling snow up Middle Creek.

March 13 - Deep powder up Middle Creek. Natou getting some air in the cut block.

March 6 - Skin track through all that new snow up Middle Creek with the cutblock in the back. The skiing was really great.

March 5 - Brad catching a little air near the top of Pillowpalooza. What an amazing day. Good light, with deep dry powder. It was fantastic.

March 6 - Natou at the top of Pillowpalooza. Such a good run.

March 6 - About halfway up Pillowpalooza and planning out our lines.

March 4 - Jordon Manley and Chad Sayers planning out the next shot for their film on the Shames Mountain Co-op idea.

March 4 - Elissa doing what she does most days out. Entertaining us with her antics.

March 13/2011 - With all that snow up on Oscar but some instabilities we thought Middle Creek might be better. What we found was even more snow and more coming down from the sky. It was another shitshow getting the sleds up the road which we couldn't have done without Natou's big machine. Again lots of pushing, pulling and rolled sleds. But we pushed a trail up the timber cut and into the forest a bit above. The skiing was all time. Just point them and go. If only the visibility was better, goggles were not fogging up and clothing quickly becoming saturated.
At the bottom even though we were all well on our way to being very wet we had to use the skin track for another lap. It was just as good as the first one but for the most part we were dealing with foggy goggles which makes things difficult when its snowing so hard and the snow is right up in your face because its so deep.
We'd all had enough at the bottom and were just sopping wet. The sled ride out wasn't the funnest I've ever had and when the snow turned to rain further down we all hoped to just get the day over with. Fun time out but so wet.

March 12/2011 - Up to Oscar with a big party of 7 and only 1 sled. It didn't add too much to the day with two shuttles but we couldn't have gotten into the area so easily without Natou's big sled. We started the day in the sun but by the time we were at the top of the meadow the weather had moved in and that was it until later in the afternoon. We bashed a track up Pillowpalooza right in the milk bottle not even getting to the ridgeline above. We skied the left hand run finding deep snow once again which was really fun. The only issue for me other than some somewhat unstable conditions was that I was quickly wet and couldn't see more than a few feet in front.

We called it due to instabilities, visibility and poor weather and pushed up to the top of the meadow to ski out. The sky cleared and sun came out at this point and with the warming came a few slides which further supported our decision to get out. The skiing through the meadow was fun on slushy snow of the kind that sprays up onto your outside leg. I really enjoyed it. All that was left was a long ski out to the highway that was helped near the end hanging onto a rope behind a sled.

March 6/2011 - The snow fell even harder to the south of the Skeena and up Middle Creek and we could only get the sleds up to the switchback. Even Natou's big sled was bogging down in the deep snow. The sled trench was thigh to waste deep. Even with a trench put in by Natou and his big high powered machine there was still loads of pushing, pulling and rolling of the machines but we soon found ourselves at the switchback with some really deep powder. A track was put up the cutblock which we soon skied and it was amazing. The snow was so deep that all we could do was go straight. The second lap we went to just below the summit of Tri Mountain to an elevation of 1400m. This made for a great 800m run down to the waiting sleds below. Really a great 4 day stint of deep powder skiing.

March 5/2011 - We headed north to Oscar Peak to ski some fun deep powder with a group of 6 people. We ended up skiing Old Wise One and Pillowpalooza. The first run we did was great but you have to be on your game with trees and pillows so close together. Lots of coming around corners to find a big pillow in your way with another one on the landing. Lots of fun though and we marched up Pillowpalooza right after for an even better lap. My first on this run where I could actually see and I put together a fun run complete with wide open turns, airs and pillow to pillow airs. We didn't stop though and skied right to the bottom of the scree field right of the waterfall. It was absolutely fantastic.

March 4/2011 - The clear and calm weather didn't last but we wanted to keep skiing so headed up to the hill for strong winds with blowing snow. There was another load of fresh snow and the skiing was again really good. We did another day of valley bottoms that didn't disappoint. Loads of faceshots and good times.

March 3/2011 - I ran Roy to the top of the ski hill Wednesday night finding a strong blowing snow like blizzard with slabby snow so was a bit surprised to find Thursday morning that the report was showing 25cm or something like that with a clear and calm sky. Elissa and I were up there getting pretty close to first chair and found an empty resort with loads of really great snow under a bright sun. It was amazing!

We met Brad after a few runs and decided it would be best to head out into the backcountry to do some valley bottom laps which were great. The snow was dry and bottomless. Can't better than that.
